Widecombe St Pancras Church, Devon
- Located in Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, South West England, England
- The 'Cathedral of the Moor', Widecombe St Pancras Church is a large and impressive building in the centre of the popular moorland village Widecombe in the Moor in the eastern section of Dartmoor National Park
- The church we see today dates from the late 1300s and its Perpendicular tower is a major feature in the landscape in this area of the Park
- If you head up onto Hamel Down and follow the Two Moors Way to the area around Bennett's Cross, you'll be on the fringe of Headland Warren and Farm. This is the site of extensive tin mining, some of the proceeds from which were used to build Widecombe St Pancras Church. When you are inside the church, look up at the roof bosses. You'll see the 'Tinners Rabbits' boss, a reminder of this mining past. We'd recommend looking at images taken by the local photographer Chris Chapman for further information. We provide a link to the 'Three Hares Project' website
- Also within the church, look our for the wallboards that tell a violent, local story from which the following is taken: 'During the Sunday afternoon service of October 21st, 1638, a thunderstorm visited the valley. Lightning [sic] struck the tower and part of it fell through the roof. A fire-ball passed through the church and four people died'
- Next to the church is the National Trust's Sextons Cottage and Church House. When we visited, we were told that the building has limited opening times. Check the National Trust site for details, website link provided below
