The Dewerstone, Devon

  • Located in Shaugh Prior, Devon, South West England, England
  • The Dewerstone is an exceptionally beautiful area close to the south west border of Dartmoor National Park. It's famous for its crags which attract high numbers of climbers. At the top of this area is Dewerstone Rock
  • The rivers Meavy and Plym join by The Dewerstone before flowing towards the Devon coast
  • The crags are known locally as the Devil's Rocks. It's said that the Devil and his hounds drive people over the side of the crags to their death*
  • To visit, we'd recommend parking by Shaugh Bridge which is just to the north west of Shaugh Prior. There's a wooden bridge that crosses the river and leads you to a large path. This type of path is rare in Dartmoor and is an indication of the area's popularity. We've located The Dewerstone on Google maps so zoom in on the satellite setting to explore the area
  • The Dewerstone is at the mouth of one of Dartmoor's many beautiful wooded valleys and cleaves. We'd recommend the circular walk between Shaugh Bridge and Cadover Bridge. We've done this with small children and it took about three hours. Refer to the Ordnance Survey OL28 'Dartmoor' map. The route is clearly marked on the Harvey British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' map, too
