Tavistock Duke of Bedford Statue, Devon

  • Located in Tavistock, Devon, South West England, England
  • Plymouth Road runs through the centre of Tavistock. At the south west end of this road is the Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Statue. At the north east end of the road is the Tavistock Duke of Bedford Statue. Between, in places, are the ruins of Tavistock Abbey. These statues and ruined abbey buildings provide a convenient introduction to the fascinating history of this town as it moved from medieval abbey town to a cradle of Elizabethan seafaring to centuries of extraordinary industrial output
  • Tavistock Abbey was dissolved in 1539. The site of the abbey, its land and possessions passed into the ownership of John Russell who was made Earl of Bedford about ten years later in 1550. The Earls of Bedford subsequently became the Dukes of Bedford. The statue you see today in Bedford Square is of the seventh Duke of Bedford and the plinth is dated 1864
  • By the nineteenth century, Tavistock and the surrounding area were part of an internationally important mining industry that's reflected in its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The Dukes of Bedford redeveloped much of Tavistock using profits generated from local mining activity. They cleared slums, built workers' cottages and public buildings and space such as Bedford Square and Tavistock Town Hall
