Tavistock Canal Walk, Devon

  • Located in Tavistock, Devon, South West England, England
  • Tavistock Canal connects the Rivy Tavy at Tavistock to the old copper port Morwellham Quay on the River Tamar. A significant section of the canal runs through a tunnel under Morwelldown. The Tavistock Canal Walk follows the canal from Tavistock to the area around the northern entrance, or northern portal, of this tunnel
  • The walk begins at the large car park in the centre of Tavistock. The path runs through Tavistock Meadows towards Tavistock College. From there, it curves around a spur of land towards the impressive Shillamill Viaduct. On your way, you walk under the canopies of beautiful trees and pass Crowndale Farm. This is said to be the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake. The path runs under Shillamill Viaduct to a lock. At the end of the walk you come to a wood sculpture representing the northern portal to which we refer above. Note that this tunnel entrance is not accessible to the public
  • There are poems and route markers along the Tavistock Canal Walk. The poems were written by local school children. The markers have images of local wildlife you might see on the walk. There are also seating areas along the canal. One seating area provides particularly impressive views of Shillamill Viaduct
  • When we photographed and researched the walk, it took about two hours there and back. Browse the 'Photo Gallery' to see images of the walk
