St Ives School of Art, Cornwall

  • Located in St. Ives, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • The 'St Ives school of art' refers to a twentieth century art movement. The 'Newlyn school of art' is an example of another art movement on The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula). Other areas on the peninsula became the focus of artistic communities such as the Lamorna Art Colony. This listing locates the 'St Ives school of art' within the context of these other art movements and artistic communities. It's also worth noting that The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula) has attracted many writers as well. For example, D.H. Lawrence spent time living in Zennor before he was evicted from the county in 1917. Virginia Woolf's 1927 novel 'To the Lighthouse' was inspired by childhood memories of Godrevy Island and Lighthouse
  • For a defintion of the 'St Ives school of art', we're using the Tate St Ives guide. It reads: 'For more than a century there have been many artists producing realistically observed marine and landscape paintings in a tradition little altered from that established by the Newlyn school. St Ives' place in art history, however, is most firmly identified with a very different kind of art, produced by painters and sculptors working in the modernist tradition and its later offshoots. The term 'St Ives school' has been loosely applied to the succession of painters and sculptors active in west Cornwall from the 1940s onwards, who explored the potential of abstract art and, later, strove to combine abstract formal language with landscape themes and subjects'.
