Newlyn School of Art, Cornwall

  • Located in Newlyn, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula) has been attracting artists for centuries. J.M.W. Turner visited in 1811. The expansion of the railway made it easier for artists to travel to this remote part of Cornwall in the Victorian era. Artistic communities emerged in various places along the coast. From Newlyn came an art movement now known as the 'Newlyn school of art'
  • Among the first resident artists were Walter Langley and Stanhope Forbes. You can see a commemorative plaque and sculpture of Stanhope Alexander Forbes R.A. 1857-1947 on a wall of the Newlyn Art Gallery (pictured)
  • So, what is the 'Newlyn school of art'? 'The artists were united by a desire to paint 'en plein air', depicting the lives of the villagers in a rural naturalist style.' (Source: information board within the Penzance Penlee House Gallery and Museum). In addition, there's a useful defintion in the Tate St Ives guide. In West Cornwall, 'for more than a century there have been many artists producing realistically oberved marine and landscape paintings in a tradition little altered from that established by the Newlyn school.' (Source: Tate St Ives Souvenir Guide)
  • To see a superb collection of Newlyn school of art work, visit the Penzance Penlee House Gallery and Museum. Whilst you're there, we'd also recommend spending time in the museum rooms. One of these provides an excellent introduction to the prehistory and history of The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula)
  • For information about other artistic communities on The Land's End Peninsula, see our lsitings for St Ives School of Art and the Lamorna Art Colony
