Mount Misery Cross, Devon

  • Located in Princetown, Devon, South West England, England
  • Before Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in the middle of the sixteenth century, abbeys and priories were exceptionally wealthy and powerful institutions. What we know as Dartmoor National Park was once fringed by a number of working abbeys and a priory. Clearly, monks moved between these places. They followed ancient travel routes such as the aptly named Abbot's Way across the moors. Another ancient path was called the 'Buckfast-Tavistock (monastic)' route. It's on this ancient route that you'll find Mount Misery Cross
  • The name is wonderful. It's typical of the evocative names you discover when exploring this section of the Park. Mount Misery and the Heap of Sinners, Deadman's Bottom and Evil Combe are siren calls to Dartmoor obsessives. Mount Misery probably refers to the working conditions at the nearby tin mine. Given the cross's location above the tin works and Foxtor Mires, it seems likely. However, if you know of a different explanation for this name then we'd love to hear from you
  • In good weather, as part of a recreational walk, the location is stunning. Fox Tor and Fox Tor Girt are to the south west. Childe's Tomb is way below on the edge of Foxtor Mires. On the horizon to the west are the tors surrounding Burrator Reservoir. Browse the 'Photo Gallery' to see more

Ter Hill, Devon
