Knill's Monument, Cornwall

  • Located in St. Ives, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • If you're on holiday in St Ives and fancy a trip inland, try a walk to Knill's Monument. Take the South West Coast Path behind St Ives Porthminster Beach towards Carbis Bay. On your way, you'll see a waymarker for the St Michael's Way. This cuts across the neck of The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula) to Mount's Bay. As you walk the St Michael's Way, you'll pass Knill's Monument
  • Knill's Monument refers to John Knill (1733-1811). Knill was a Customs' Collector in St Ives. The monument was intended as a mausoleum but he was buried in London. There's an excellent biography entitled 'John Knill, 1733-1811' on the Internet Archive website to which we provide an external link. The biography begins: 'On a hill near St. Ives, on the north coast of Cornwall, stands a granite obelisk, which serves as a landmark to vessels at sea, and is familiarly known in that neighbourhood as KnilVs Mausoleum [sic], because it was erected by a gentleman of that name many years ago'
