The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula) is fringed by many spectacular cliff castles. Cliff castles are Iron Age forts built on headlands that jut out into the sea. With the sea protecting three sides of the headland and earthworks defending the approach from land, these forts would have provided refuge in violent times. Clearly, this defensive function doesn't preclude other usage. They are the coastal equivalent of the Iron Age hillforts you find inland on The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula) and throughout South West England
