Grenofen Tunnel, Devon

  • Located in Tavistock, Devon, South West England, England
  • Grenofen is a long tunnel running underneath the A386 Tavistock to Yelverton road on the border of Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley AONB. Grenofen Tunnel is part of Drake's Trail. As you pass through the tunnel heading south, the next major points of interest are the impressive new Gem Bridge and then the brick Magpie Viaduct
  • We visited and photographed Grenofen Tunnel in October after heavy rain. The tunnel was dripping wet so take a coat and hat if the weather's wet! There are lights within the tunnel to help you on your way
  • Zoom in on the accompanying Google map to see Grenofen Tunnel's location. Also browse the 'Photo Gallery' to see more
  • Grenofen is a 'refurbished tunnel built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel'. (Source: BBC article 'New Devon cycle path links Plymouth with Tavistock' to which we provide an external link). Note that the original timber viaducts at Gem Bridge and Magpie Viaduct were also designed by Brunel
  • All these points of interest on the railway were part of 'the South Devon and Tavistock Railway, which was later absorbed into the Great Western Railway'. (Source: information board at Gem Bridge)
