Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies, Devon

  • Located in Buckfastleigh, Devon, South West England, England
  • Follow the brown steam engine and butterfly signs to the South Devon Railway and Dartmoor Otter and Buckfast Butterflies at Buckfastleigh on the eastern border of Dartmoor National Park. Drive past the railway station and the road bends sharp left under a low bridge in to a large car park. Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies is by this car park. We've positioned the attraction on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its exact location
  • You first enter the butterfly house through a large shop. Butterflies, fish and terrapins can be seen in this glasshouse. You'll see butterflies in the process of emerging from their chrysalises. It can get very hot. From the butterfly house, you then walk outside to the otter sanctuary. At the time of writing, there were three species of otter: the North American otter, the Asian short clawed otter and the British or Eurasian otter. Viewing platforms provide close views of the otters. The underwater viewing area is, in our opinion, particularly impressive. Watching the animlas swim and play underwater is a joy. If possible, we'd recommend listening to one of the talks at feeding time. The keepers are fascinating and the otters come particularly close
