Cranbrook Castle, Devon
- Located in Chagford, Devon, South West England, England
- Cranbrook Castle is an Iron Age hillfort sited high above the Teign Gorge in the northern section of Dartmoor National Park. The National Trust's Castle Drogo is visible across the valley to the north west. Another Iron Age hillfort, Prestonbury Castle, is close by to the north east. Zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting of the accompanying Google map to see a good aerial view of the hillfort
- We've visited Cranbrook Castle on numerous occasions. If you're lucky enough to walk in on a sunny day, when the light is clean, you'll see why they built the fort here. The views are massive. To the south is the distinctive bulge of Haytor Rocks. Moving clockwise, you'll see Hamel Down, Fernworthy Forest, Meldon Hill above Chagford, the high moors around Hangingstone Hill, Cosdon Beacon and Hill, Mid and North Devon, Exmoor National Park, the hills around Exeter and then the lower section of the Teign Gorge
- There's limited parking by Cranbrook. However, we'd recommend yomping up from Fingle Bridge. You can also walk in via Iron Bridge by Castle Drogo
- Other Iron Age hillforts on Dartmoor include:
- Prestonbury Castle above Fingle Bridge
- Wooston Castle east of Fingle Bridge in the Teign Gorge
- Nattadon on Nattadon Common
- Hembury Hillfort/Castle
- East Hill by Okehampton Camp
- Hunter's Tor Fort
- The hillfort at Brent Hill
- The hillfort at Brent Tor
- Just beyond the southern border of Dartmoor National Park is Borringdon Fort
- Also note that there are what are thought to be much older enclosures at White Tor and at Dewerstone Hill. We position these on Google maps. If you zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting, you'll see aerial imagery of the enclosures. White Tor is most obvious
