Cotehele Quay, Cornwall

  • Located in Calstock, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • Cotehele is a National Trust property located above the River Tamar on the Cornwall border. Whilst the house is fascinating and its gardens impressive, there's plenty more to discover on the estate. Down by the river is Cotehele Quay. Packed with points of interest, the quay tells the story of Cotehele's commercial past. It's also a beautiful, serene place where you can buy a cream tea or ice cream. When you visit Cotehele, make sure you plan in some time to walk down to the quay. Alternatively, there's a relatively large car park with a kids' play area which is clearly visible on Google's satellite imagery
  • Points of interest on Cotehele Quay include Cotehele Discovery Centre and Cotehele The Edgcumbe Arms. We've taken a trip with Canoe Tamar from the quay. Cotehele Mill is a short walk around the corner. You can also follow a good path and narrow road in the other direction to Calstock Viaduct and Calstock
  • 'Today the River Tamar is relatively empty compared with the trading highway it was 150 years ago. At high tide, quays along the river bustled with activity as goods were unloaded and loaded, ready to go to Plymouth and beyond. In the sixteenth century Richard Edgcumbe built a bridge linking Cotehele Quay to Botherick Quay on the other side of the Morden stream.'
