Cotehele Discovery Centre, Cornwall

  • Located in Calstock, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • Cotehele's Discovery Centre provides information about Cotehele and its place within the Tamar Valley AONB. Located on Cotehele Quay in one of the old riverside buildings, there are a series of interpretation boards and models that guide visitors through the workings of industries that once thrived in the local area. You'll see a model reconstruction of the quay with produce from market gardens being loaded onto boats ready to be transported downriver to Plymouth. In turn, in this model, you'll see coal and limestone that was shipped upriver to feed lime kilns. These kilns produced lime which was used to condition the soil in the local market gradens. Another model shows Cotehele Quay's position relative to the National Trust's Cotehele House and Gardens and the other quays that lined the River Tamar around Calstock. Interpretation boards cover the copper mining and boat building industries. There's also information on the advent of tourism
  • It's a super place with high quality information so make sure you plan time to visit when you're in the area. As ever, we've located the point of interest on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location
  • If you're looking to discover the Tamar Valley, we'd also recommend these places for additional information:
  • Tamar Valley Centre

  • Tamar Trails Centre
  • Buckland Abbey
  • If you fancy an adventure, book a trip with Canoe Tamar. Our canoe trip started in front of Cotehele Discovery Centre and followed the River Tamar below Calstock Viaduct and beyond
