Conies Down Tor, Devon
- Located in Princetown, Devon, South West England, England
- An unspectacular collection of small, rocky outcrops in a spectacular location. On a clear day, Conies Down Tor provides stunning views of the southern and western sections of Dartmoor National Park, South Devon and Cornwall
- There's a long, long view south west into Cornwall. The hills far away on the horizon are the clay mines of the Cornish Alps. Closer are the tors and summits of Bodmin Moor. In front of Bodmin Moor is the area around Kit Hill Country Park. Then comes the western fringe of Dartmoor National Park. You'll see the tops of the Staple Tors, White Tor and Great Mis Tor. The sea is visible by Plymouth and Rame Head. The distinctive North Hessary Tor and Radio/TV Station runs into the rolling moorland of the high south plateau. Close, to the south east, are a cluster of tors including Lydford Tor and the Beardown Tors. The Lych Way cuts across the National Park at this point. North east is the surreal vertical of Beardown Man Standing Stone breaking the skyline. North is the high north plateau where a number of famous Devon rivers begin. Conies Down rises above Conies Down Tor. Cocks Hill obscures larger views to the west. The top of Lynch Tor is just visible
- In our opinion, the easiest way to visit Conies Down Tor is from the car parking area at Holming Beam and Long Plantation. This is on the edge of Merrivale Range which is an army training area. Check MOD firing times before visiting. Red flags fly when the army is training

We researched and photographed the Conies Down area in late November. The sun was low. Ordinarily, winter light from a low sun accentuates shape and detail in the landscape. It's a great time to capture images of stone r...

We'd recommend visiting Devil's Tor for its location and views. The granite outcrops are small by Dartmoor standards but the location and views more than make up for that. It's a wonderful place, especially if you're loo...
