'Market gardens once lined the warm south facing slopes of the valley producing early flowers and plants, which were taken to Plymouth on the 'market boat'. Cherries, apples and strawberries were grown in such abundance that visitors in the late 18th Century wrote of the valley as a vast fruit garden.' (Source: local information board)
