Buckland Abbey Estate, Devon

  • Located in Buckland Monachorum, Devon, South West England, England
  • Buckland Abbey is a National Trust property near the Devon and Cornwall border. The converted abbey buildings sit within a much larger estate that you can explore on foot via a number of walks. The walks vary in distance. The shortest takes about an hour to complete. The longest takes about two and a half hours and runs through Great North Wood and then close to the east bank of the River Tavy
  • The views, as you would expect, are superb. You'll see Buckland Abbey from various viewpoints, Lopwell Dam, the Tamar Valley, the high moors of Dartmoor National Park and areas of Devon and Cornwall
  • There are lots of points of interest on the walks that provide insight into the history of the estate. At Shepherd's Cot, for example, an information board states that 'early records of the Buckland estate tell us that the connection to sea by the Rivy Tavy was important for trade, transport and communication. The tidal reach of the Tavy is now stopped by Lopwell Dam, a mile downstream'. In the local area, we'd recommend visiting Morwellham Quay and Calstock Quay to learn more about the importance of the Rivers Tavy and Tamar to trade and especially the mining industry
