Branscombe Mouth, Devon
- Located in Branscombe, Devon, South West England, England
- South east of the village Branscombe, where Branscombe Beach meets Hooken Beach, a stream runs across the pale pebbles into the sea. This is the Branscombe Mouth area. We've positioned it on Google maps so zoom in on the 'satellite' setting to see its exact location. If you're wanting to explore the area, we'd suggest you look at the Ordnance Survey Explorer 116 'Lyme Regis & Bridport' and Ordnance Survey Explorer 115 'Exmouth & Sidmouth' maps. Branscombe Mouth is on the edge of these maps so you'll need to consult both to explore the wider area
- Part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site within the East Devon AONB, Branscombe Mouth is a popular attraction. There's parking behind the pebble beach and a shop and a cafe with plenty of outdoor seating
- We'd recommend walking east along Hooken Beach to The Pinnacles (Hooken Beach) before looping back through Under Hooken on the South West Coast Path. Also walk the cliffs here east to Beer Head. The views are massive
- 'The red mudstones that form the lower cliffs westwards from Branscombe Mouth contain few sedimentary features that might indicate how they were formed, and no fossils except the poorly preserved traces of plant roots. Their red colour, the absence of features indicative of flowing water, and the lack of fossil remains show that they were deposited in the hostile environment of a hot, dry desert. Similar deposits are forming at the present time in areas adjacent to the Persian Gulf and Death Valley in California.' (Source: information board on site)
