Beer Quarry Caves, Devon
- Located in Beer, Devon, South West England, England
- We've visited mines and caves all over the UK. The Beer Quarry Caves tour is up there with the best of them. The man-made caves are awesome. The effort and skill which went into shaping them are humbling. Rain or shine, if you're holidaying in Devon, Dorset or Somerset, we'd recommend making the effort to visit Beer Quarry Caves
- On the outskirts of the village, Beer Quarry Caves are inland from the dramatic coastline that runs east and west of Beer Head. We've positioned Beer Quarry Caves on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its exact location. There's a reasonably large car park that's clearly visible on that satellite imagery
- To explore the caves, you must book a tour. Hard hats are provided. Bring warm clothing as it can get very cold. Once you are in the caves you are guided through millennia of of quarrying history starting with the Romans and moving though the Saxon, Norman and Medieval periods towards the twentieth century. Look out for the secret Catholic chapel and the hundreds of signatures and messages written on the quarry walls. Most poignant, the tour provides insight into the harsh conditions in which quarrymen and masons worked
- Beer Stone has been used in internationally important buildings. These include Exeter Cathedral and Winchester Cathedral
- In the local area, visit Beer Beach and walk the South West Coast Path to Beer Head and along Hooken Beach to Branscombe. For something more relaxing, take the Seaton Tramway up the Axe Valley. The valley is lined with nature reserves
- If you are looking to explore South West England and Beer Quarry Caves are of interest then we'd recommend visiting the numerous attractions that form the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. The quarries in Dartmoor National Park are impressive. The cave systems in the Mendip Hills AONB are always popular
