Ballowall Barrow - Carn Gluze, Cornwall

  • Located in St. Just, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • A short, sharp walk south west of Cape Cornwall is Ballowall Barrow. Dating from the Bronze Age, this burial cairn is one of the most impressive we've seen on The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula). When we first researched and photographed the area, we walked in on the South West Coast Path from Cot Valley and missed the cairn as we continued to the dramatic rocky promontory Carn Gloose. As such, we'd recommend zooming in on the 'Satellite' setting of the Google map provided to see its exact location. Note that you can drive to Ballowall Barrow and Carn Gloose as well
  • The location is stunning. On a clear day, you're able to look across Whitesand Bay to Sennen Cove Beach and the area around Land's End. Out at sea, you'll notice Longships lighthouse and then the Isles of Scilly AONB on the horizon. Inland is England's first and last hill. All around you are the remains of tin mines and engine houses that once covered the site. You'll also see modern circular walls that were recently built around the mine shafts to protect visitors from danger
  • There's an information board on site. This describes Ballowall Barrow as 'one of the largest and most complex of the prehistoric funerary monuments that cluster along the West Penwith coastline. Often sited in dramatic locations, it is likely that they were built by local communities to provide striking shrines or tombs for the dead'. See the photograph of this board for further information
  • Other prehistoric sites we'd recommend visiting on The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula) include Lanyon Quoit, Chun Quoit and Mulfra Quoit. The ancient villages of Carn Euny and Chysauster Ancient Village are extraordinary
