Avon Dam Reservoir Valley, Devon

  • Located in South Brent, Devon, South West England, England
  • Many of Devon's most famous rivers rise on the high moors of Dartmoor National Park. Some of these rivers flow through gorgeous wooded valleys that fringe the moors. Others cut beautiful valleys long cleared of trees. Tavy Cleave and the Avon Dam Reservoir Valley are good examples of the latter
  • The River Avon rises in a mire by Ryder's Hill on Dartmoor's south plateau. It flows fast around Huntingdon Hill into Avon Dam Reservoir. From there, the river cuts a beautiful, steep-sided valley that ends at the car parking area at Shipley Bridge
  • To explore the valley, we'd suggest you start from Shipley Bridge. It's a reasonably large parking area that's clearly visible on Google's satellite imagery. There are also public loos. From Shipley Bridge, you follow a good tarmac road on the western bank of the River Avon. There are beautiful, flat rock areas where you can sit by the water. You then cross a bridge to follow the eastern bank of the river up to the dam. The views are fine
  • Other Dartmoor valleys we'd recommend visiting include:
  • Tavy Cleave
  • Dart Gorge
  • Lustleigh Cleave
  • Teign Gorge
  • Belstone Cleave
  • Dewerstone Valley
  • Piles Valley
