Avon Dam Reservoir, Devon

  • Located in South Brent, Devon, South West England, England
  • Shipley Bridge is a popular beauty spot in the south east section of Dartmoor National Park close to the village South Brent. About two kilometres north of Shipley Bridge is the Avon Dam Reservoir. A large body of water set beneath rolling high moorland, the location is stunning. We've positioned Avon Dam Reservoir on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its exact location. We'd also recommend referring to the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map for detail
  • Dartmoor National Park has two high moorland plateaus. Roughly speaking, they are separated by the B3212 which cuts across the Park. To the south of the road is Dartmoor's south pleateau. In the centre of this plateau are numerous mires and bogs. The River Avon rises on this ground. The river then flows south east around Huntingdon Warren and under Huntingdon Clapper Bridge before flowing into the Avon Dam Reservoir. Browse our 'Photo Gallery' to see the upper section. The reservoir is about one kilometre long west to east. A huge dam controls the flow of water into the River Avon as it continues south to Shipley Bridge
  • The easiest way to visit the Avon Dam Reservoir is from the car park at Shipley Bridge. You walk up a modern tarmac road to get to the dam. The Avon Dam Reservoir Valley is beautiful. There are flat rock areas next to the River Avon on which to sit and picnic
  • If you fancy a longer walk, we'd recommend following the old Zeal Tor Tramroad to Western White Barrow. Drop down to Huntingdon Clapper Bridge to cross the River Avon and then follow what is known as the Abbot's Way along the north bank of the Avon Dam Reservoir before returning to Shipley Bridge on the aforementioned tarmac road
