Museums and canal locks
On the western fringe of Pewsey Vale, the impressive Wiltshire market town of Devizes is home to a couple of superb local museums, a brewery and a nationally important set of canal locks.

Devizes is close to some of the UK's most extraordinary prehistoric sites. To learn more about this aspect of the area, we can't recommend highly enough the Wiltshire Heritage Museum. Compact and quirky, it's a fine place. The Kennet and Avon Canal runs past the town. Visit the Kennet and Avon Canal Museum. The Wadworth Brewery and Visitor Centre is fascinating and we'd suggest you walk the Caen Hill Locks. These are the world's steepest flight of canal locks.

White horses and stone circles
North of Devizes, beyond the location of the 17th century English Civil War battleground of Roundway Down, are Cherhill White Horse and Oldbury Castle. Top walking country with massive views.

Further east is Avebury stone circle which shares a UNESCO World Heritage designation with Stonehenge. Here, you'll also see Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow, The Sanctuary and The Avenue Standing Stones. The Ridgeway National Trail passes through here. Try also walking and mountain biking on the downs above Alton Barnes White Horse.

Local attractions
Bowood House and Gardens are to the north west as is the National Trust's Lacock village. To the west of Devizes, on the southern border of the Cotswolds, are Bradford-on-Avon and Bath. The latter is another UNESCO World Heritage site. These are rare, so visit.

Longleat Safari Park, Longleat House and Stourhead Estate are to the south west. Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral are to the south east. To the north east is Marlborough and, a little further on, Swindon.

Day trips
If you're on holiday in or around Devizes for any period of time, we'd suggest you take a few day trips to discover other attractions and destinations in South West England. Try the Cotswolds and Dorset Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the New Forest National Park and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

We'd recommend trips to Salisbury, Winchester, Bath and Bristol. It's also relatively easy to get to iconic South West attractions such as Glastonbury Tor and Cheddar Gorge.
