Surrey, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Royal Palaces and Royal Horticultural Gardens
Home to Hampton Court Palace and the Royal Horticultural Society's Wisley Garden, the site of one of the UK's most important historical events and some if its finest adventure Parks, Surrey has everything for a great break.

In South East England. London to the north and the counties of Kent, East and West Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire surround it.

Natural Beauty
An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Surrey Hills, runs across the centre of the county and pushes down into its south west corner. Clearly, it's a remarkably beautiful area. Try Box Hill to the east and the Devil's Punch Bowl to the south west. Leith Hill is the county's highest point and lies within the AONB.

Whilst not in the county of Surrey, the exceptionally popular South Downs National Park is just to the south and south west. Other AONBs such as the Sussex Downs and Kent Downs are near.

Places in which to base yourself
The county town is historically Guildford although local government is centred in Kingston. If you're not hiring a cottage, try Godalming and Guildford, Haslemere and Dorking. To the north east of the county, pushing towards London, are Esher, Cobham and Walton on Thames.

The River Thames flows through the north of the county on its way through London.

History and culture
The most obvious attraction is Hampton Court Palace. Try also Guildford Cathedral and Clandon Park. In 1215, the Magna Carta was signed at Runnymede.

Outdoors and Play
Visit Winkworth Arboretum, Leith Hill, The North Downs, Puttenham and Crooksbury Commons.

The North Downs Way runs from Farnham in the west of Surrey down to Dover on the Kent coast.

If you're looking for family entertainment, visit Thorpe Park, Go Ape! (Alice Holt, Surrey) and Chessington World of Adventures.
