Northernmost part of the UK
North of the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland. The northernmost part of the UK.

An archipelago, or cluster of islands, off mainland Scotland. In the region of a dozen islands are inhabited out of a total of about one hundred. As is the case with the Orkneys, the main island within the archipelago is called 'Mainland'.

The administrative HQ is Lerwick.

The Shetland Islands are home to one of Scotland's many National Scenic Areas. The Shetland NSA consists of an number of geographic areas on the islands.

Culture and history
The Shetlands are famous for the Viking fire festival of Up Helly Aa which takes place within Lerwick in the depths of winter providing opportunities for stunning photography.

For history, try the remarkable Jarlshof. With a history spanning almost 5000 years, this settlement is less well known than Skara Brae on Mainland Orkney but equally as impressive. The Broch of Mousa, a round tower perhaps of military or agricultural origins, was built before the birth of Christ.

To learn more about the islands and their history, visit the Shetland Museum.

The poet Hugh MacDiarmid lived on the Shetlands and we recommend his poetry.

Wildlife and beaches
According to its official website, there are a whopping 200,000 puffins on the archipelago, 54,000 gannets and 138 beaches enjoyed by a population of 22,000.

Getting there
Take a ferry or fly.

Flights run from major UK airports such as Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Ferries run from Aberdeen to Lerwick direct or via the Orkney Islands. See the Northlink ferry site for details, link provided.
