High Weald AONB, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Weald means wilderness or forest.

Where is the Weald and where is the High Weald?
In the south east of England between the North and South Downs. The Weald runs from above Petersfield in Hampshire across Surrey, East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent.

The High Weald is the central part of The Weald and runs from East Grinstead and Royal Tunbridge Wells in the north of the AONB down to Hastings and Rye on the coast. The High Weald is mostly in East Sussex with parts in Kent.

Best described on the High Weald AONB site ‘It is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for its rolling hills, small, irregular fields, abundant woods and hedges, scattered farmsteads and sunken lanes.’

There's a fine view of the High Weald from the Devil's Dyke in West Sussex. Looking north and north east, the landscape opens out in front of you.

Places in which to base yourself
Down on the coast, on the AONB boundary, visit Hastings and Rye. Close to Rye is the amazing Camber Sands. To the north, base yourself in Tunbridge Wells, to the west try either East Grinstead or Horsham.

For the AONBs ridge top hills try Mayfield and Burwash.

If you holiday here and want to explore the area, book a good few weeks as there's a lot to see.

At the top of the list should be Battle Abbey and Battlefield and Bodiam Castle. Then there are Herstmonceux Castle and Wakehurst Place Gardens, Sheffield Park Garden and Scotney Castle and Gardens.

Batemans was home to Rudyard Kipling, Sissinghurst Castle Gardens was developed by Vita Sackville-West and Sir Harold Nicolson.

Oast houses
Last, look out for the oast houses once used to dry hops. They're a magnificent site.
