Gloucestershire, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Home to much of the Cotswolds, possibly the UK's most famous Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Gloucestershire pulls in huge numbers of domestic and international holiday makers. Some of the prettiest villages and towns in the UK are located here. Great walking country and packed with historical attractions. Even has an annual cheese rolling event. The county town is Gloucester.

In South West England. Surrounded by the counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. Across the border in Wales is Monmouthshire. South west is Bristol City.

In addition to the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), over in the west there's a section of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to enjoy. Gloucestershire creeps into the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) at Bromsberrow, too.

Gloucester is the county's major city but there are plenty of other towns in which to base yourself for a Gloucestershire/Cotswolds holiday. Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester, Tewkesbury, Stow-on-the-Wold, Winchcombe and Chipping Campden are all exceptional places.

Villages, for which the county is well known, can be mesmerising. Try Bibury, Northleach, Lower Slaughter, Bourton-on-the-Water and Snowshill.

For culture, we'd recommend Corinium Museum and Gloucester Cathedral, for historical buildings head for Dyrham Park House, Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucester Cathedral, , Sudeley Castle, Hailes Abbey, Cirencester St John the Baptist Church, Cirencester Roman Amphitheatre, Berkeley Castle and Snowshill Manor.

If you're looking for wildlife and nature, the county has two exceptional attractions in Slimbridge Wetland Centre and Westonbirt Arboretum.

If you want to walk off a meal from one of the county's many great pubs try Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, Cotswold Way, Westonbirt Arboretum and Dyrham Park Deer Park.
