North Dartmoor
Beautiful village on the northern fringe of Dartmoor and a great base for the high moors and mountains of the Park as well as its many stunning wooded 'cleaves' or valleys.

Moors and mountains
Located to the north east of Cosdon Beacon and Hill, South Zeal is close to southern England's only two mountains, Yes Tor and High Willhays. There's a super, long, walk taking in Cosdon Beacon and Hill, Steeperton Tor, Oke Tor and Belstone Tor and Common. For something a little more gentle but equally spectacular, head into one of the Park's many 'cleaves'.

Wooded cleaves
To the west of South Zeal is Belstone Cleave, a stunning wooded valley through which runs both the Dartmoor Way and Tarka Trail. Belstone is a neighbouring, and equally beautiful, moorland village.

If these wooded valleys are your thing, we'd recommend trying the Teign Gorge and Lydford Gorge and Waterfall. The latter is a National Trust property with the highest natural waterfall in South West England. The gorge walk there is both memorable and noisey.

Top attractions
In addition to Lydford Gorge and Waterfall, the National Trust has numerous other properties local to South Zeal. Castle Drogo and Gardens is one of the UK's most popular attractions, Finch Foundry is the last water-powered forge in England.

In nearby Okehampton, you'll find the English Heritage Okehampton Castle. In the same town is the impressive Museum of Dartmoor Life.
