Holiday location
South Brent is a superb location for a
South West break. One of a number of 'gateway' towns and villages that ring
Dartmoor National Park, the village also provides quick access to the
South Devon coast, to the vibrant city of
Plymouth and the
Tamar Valley AONB beyond. High moorland, seaside, city and stunning woodland all within easy reach.
Head for the moors
Despite its reputation for being bleak,
Dartmoor is fringed with extraordinarily beautiful wooded valley or cleaves. Cut by the
River Avon, the valley to the north west of the village is superb. Leading to the Avon Dam Reservoir and high moors beyond, there's plenty of parking at Shipley Bridge.
If you're up for a longer walk, we'd recommend heading north of the Avon Dam Reservoir and then almost immediately turning west along the Abbots Way before looping back past White Barrows to Shipley Bridge. It's particularly impressive in Autumn. Further north west is Ryder's Hill, the highest point in the south of the Park, and to the north east is the exceptional Dart Valley around
Ashburton,
Buckfastleigh and the village of
Holne. The
Two Moors Way cuts across the Abbots Way to the west of Avon Dam Reservoir.
South Devon coast
South Brent is a short drive from some super beaches. The most obvious are
Bantham Beach and Dunes to the south and
Slapton Sands to the south east but check out our 'Top 10 Recommended Beaches' list around South Brent for other ideas.
Plymouth and the Tamar Valley
Once you've stretched your legs on the moors and swam in the sea on the coast, we'd suggest heading into
Plymouth. It's a great place full of family fun, culture and fascinating history. We'd also recommend pushing on to the
Tamar Valley AONB. Not particularly well known but stunning with some top National Trust properties.
