England's little Switzerland
'England's little Switzerland, where Exmoor meets the sea'. On the Exmoor National Park coastline looking out across the Bristol Channel to South Wales.

The East and West Lyn Rivers flow down from the high moors through the exceptionally beautiful National Trust's Watersmeet into Lynmouth Bay.

Coastal walking and cliff railway
A great base from which to explore the National Park and the massive beaches of the North Devon AONB, we'd recommend walking the South West Coast Path here. Close to the west is The Valley of Rocks. To the east is the stunning Foreland and Foreland Point.

In the village, there are plenty of shops aimed at people on holiday or weekend breaks. Try brass rubbing by the main car park and take the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway to the equally popular Lynton. Lynmouth's rocky beach provides excellent views, the fish and chips shop by Lynmouth Harbour is always popular.

Local attractions
Walk down to the National Trust's Watersmeet and have a cream tea.

To the south east, discover Doone Valley via the car park at County Gate. A little further in the same direction, walk to the summit of Dunkery Beacon and Hill, Exmoor National Park's highest summit.

We'd also recommend visits to Porlock Weir Beach and Dunster Castle, a trip on Lynton and Barnstaple Railway and a day trip to Exmoor Zoo.

Further afield
If beaches are your thing, spend time at Woolacombe Sand (Beach) and Croyde Sand (Beach), Saunton Sands (Beach) and Northam Burrows Beach. All these beaches are within the North Devon AONB which is an exceptional place. The dunes at Braunton Burrows are a must and at the centre of the UK's first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

To the east of Lynmouth, visit Minehead and Watchet. Minehead is the start/end of the South West Coast Path.

Remember that Dartmoor National Park and Exeter are a day trip away to the south and south east.
