Massive Atlantic beach
In North Cornwall, close to the Devon border, is a straight stretch of coastline with a handful of top surfing beaches. Widemouth Sand, in front of Widemouth Bay, is the largest of these beaches. Given its size, there are various car parks along its way. At low tide, it's a huge expanse of sand and rock pools. Along with much of the coastline north to Hartland Point, there are also extraordinary rock structures in the cliff faces.

The South West Coast Path runs through Widemouth Bay. Walk north to Bude Compass Tower and Point for awesome views of Lundy out at sea and the Bude Bay coastline. Walk south, through National Trust coastline, to Crackington Haven. The coastline here is big and demanding. If you fancy a challenge, head up High Cliff (Boscastle/Crackington Haven), said to be Cornwall's highest cliff.

The local area
For local beaches other than Widemouth Sand, try Bude Summerleaze Beach and Northcott Mouth Beach, Sandy Mouth Beach and Duckpool Beach. To the south, visit Trebarwith Strand and the beaches that line the River Camel and Estuary.

To the south of Widemouth Bay, popular tourist attractions include Boscastle Harbour and Tintagel Castle. South of those, visit Port Isaac Harbour & Beach. Inland, head to Bodmin Moor. Rough Tor (Bodmin) is popular.

For towns and villages, in addition to Bude, drive north to Clovelly. To the south, visit both Boscastle and Tintagel. South of those, visit Port Isaac, Polzeath, Rock and Padstow.

Day trips
If you're on holiday in the Widemouth Bay area for any period of time, we'd recommend exploring other areas in Devon and Cornwall. Read our recommendations for places to visit and things to do in the North Devon AONB and Exmoor National Park, Dartmoor National Park and Tamar Valley AONB.

For day trip attractions, we'd suggest the National Trust's Lanhydrock House and Gardens and The Eden Project. Cycle The Camel Trail and, if you have kids, visit Cornwall's Crealy Great Adventure Park. A little further away, we'd suggest trips to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and Charlestown Harbour. Mevagissey is a delight.
