Photo © Owner

Central England. In Staffordshire, just to the north of Birmingham and south of The Peak District National Park.

A small AONB with natural deciduous woodland and coniferous plantations. It is the largest surviving area of lowland heathland in the Midlands. Popular with walkers and mountain bikers. According to its website, ‘wild deer still roam the Chase and are probably descended from the original herd introduced in Norman times for hunting purposes.’

Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1958. The UK’s smallest AONB at just 26 square miles (68 square km). The Heart of England Way, a 100 mile path, runs through the area.
