Berkshire, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Royal Berkshire
Often referred to as 'The Royal County of Berkshire', it's home to Windsor Castle, one of the principal residences of the British monarch. There's Eton College, as well, the UK's most famous public school. However, if Royalty and public schools aren't your thing then there's plenty more on offer from the work of one of the UK's great artists to some cracking landscape.

In South East England. Bordered by Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, London, Surrey and Hampshire.*

Natural Beauty
The county has an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The North Wessex Downs are to the west of the county and the Berkshire Downs are well know as an area where racing horses train.

Horse racing
Berkshire's home to Newbury and Ascot, both of which host important race meets throughout the year. Royal Ascot is a must.

Places in which to base yourself
We'd recommend Windsor and Eton, Maidenhead and Slough. Try also Reading and Ascot. For something more intimate, visit Cookham.

Culture and history
Explore Eton College, the Museum of Reading and the Museum of English Rural Life. Try also Windsor Castle, Reading Abbey, Donnington Castle and Ashdown House.

The great artist Stanley Spencer lived in Cookham and there's a wonderful exhibition of his work wothin a converted chapel.

Fresh air and wildlife
If you're escaping London or looking for some fresh air, head for Beale Park, Windsor Great Park or yomp The Ridgeway National Trail.

And, remember, Windsor's home to Legoland, too!
