Wheal Martyn China Clay Country Park, Cornwall

  • Located in St. Austell, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • Wheal Martyn, Carthew, St Austell, Cornwall, PL26 8XG
  • Wheal Martyn, also referred to as the China Clay Country Park, is the only china clay mining museum in the UK. Divided, roughly speaking, into four experiences, we've spent full days here when researching and photographing this section of Cornwall. It's a super place, especially if you catch it when the sun's out. The four experiences are:
  • 1. An indoor exhibition area by the restaurant and shop. Information boards, videos and artefacts tell the story of the clay mining industry
  • 2. Once you've experienced the exhibition, you'll walk outside to the 'Historic Trail'. This guides you through the processes used to produce china clay
  • 3. Further on, you come to the 'Natrue Trail'. This is a good circular walk with an extension called the 'Children's Challenge Trail'
  • 4. Last, and most spectacular, is the 'Pit View' area. From afar, you should see miners at work
  • 'Set in 26 acres of woodland, nestling in the historic Ruddle Valley on the outskirts of St Austell, the China Clay Country Park provides a fascinating day out for all the family. The Park, now part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, is set in the grounds of two former working china clay pits and provides visitors with a fascinating insight into china clay - how it was mined, what is was used for and what it meant for the families who lived in the area' (source: China Clay Country Park website, link provided)
  • In its information guides and booklets, Wheal Martyn is marked as part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site
  • Once the china clay had been mined, it was transported to the coast for shipping out to its various destination markets. We'd recommend heading down to Charlestown to explore an example of a china clay port
