Tintagel Castle, Cornwall

  • Located in Tintagel, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • Tintagel, Cornwall, PL34 OHE
  • Arguably the most famous castle in South West England, Tintagel is located on the rocky North Cornwall coast. The castle is split into two sections. The first section is positioned on the mainland cliff. The second is sited on Tintagel Island. They are joined by a finger of land above which a walkway runs. The castle rises above Tintagel Beach And Haven and offers wonderful views of Tintagel village and the local coastline
  • Legend has it that King Arthur was conceived at Tintagel Castle. Now a ruin overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it was originally a Roman settlement, then a Celtic fortress and finally the thirteenth century castle seen today
  • Owing to its lack of strategic importance, the castle fell into disrepair during the fourteenth century. Today, it's managed by English Heriatge
  • A nearby cave on Tintagel Beach is known as 'Merlin's Cave' after the Arthurian wizard Merlin
  • Given the popularity of Tintagel, there are plenty of tourist information points around the village and castle. We'd recommend taking time to read these. For example, here's a snippet of information from an information board in the village: 'The Cornish Celtic name 'Dindjagell' or 'Din Tagell' means 'Fortress of the Constriction'. There are traces of settlement on Tintagel Island that date back to the Dark Ages and even the Late Roman Period. The castle ruins we see today however are purely medieval. They were built around 1236 by Earl Richard Comte de Poitou. He was second son of King John of England and half brother to Norman-French King Henri III. Earl Richard granted Borough status by Royal Charter to 'Tintajoel' in 1253. This meant that it could hold a weekly Market and an annual three-day Fair [sic] around St Faith's Day on October 6th.'
  • Inland, to the east, we'd suggest you visit Launceston Castle. Also browse our Top 10 Recommended Castles in South West England list for further inspiration
