The Pinnacles (Hooken Beach), Devon

  • Located in Branscombe, Devon, South West England, England
  • Towards the end of the 18th century, a huge section of coastline behind Hooken Beach slid into the sea. A number of chalk columns remained upright in the landslide. These are the dramatic white pinnacles you see today at the east end of Hooken Beach
  • To visit, we'd recommend starting out by the car park at Branscombe Mouth. Walk out onto the beach and head east. The Pinnacles are in front of you. Alternatively, start from the car park by Beer Cliffs and West Ebb and then follow the South West Coast Path to Beer Head. From here, you look down at The Pinnacles and up the beach towards Branscombe Mouth. All the way in the distance are Sidmouth, Ladram Bay, The English Riviera and the South Devon coastline
  • The Pinnacles are part of Under Hooken
  • If the landslide is of interest we'd recommend you visit Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs National Nature Reserve to the east
  • 'Hooken Landslip. In 1790, about 15 million tons of Greensand and Chalk cliff slowly subsided in the middle of the night. Remarkably, farm hedges and a stile remained intact. The sea rapidly removed loose material ... Subsequent erosion has left the pinnacles ... in their present precarious position.' (Source: information board on site)
