  • The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker was built in 1952-53 as part of Britain's air defence network
  • From the 1960s until 1992 the bunker was maintained as an emergency regional government defence site
  • Today the bunker is a Cold War museum and is accessed through an inconspicuous looking bungalow concealed 100 feet below Essex countryside and woodland. The radio mast is the only thing visible from the air
  • There is a 120 metre long tunnel which leads into the main bunker which contains communication and plant equipment
  • The second level is the government level and the top level contains a large canteen, dormitories, washrooms and a sick bay
  • The bunker could hold 600 civilian and military personnel as well as 110 tons of equipment
  • There is an Audio Trail available, as well as a souvenir shop and refreshments
