Teigngrace St Peter and St Paul Church, Devon

  • Located in Newton Abbot, Devon, South West England, England
  • Stover Country Park and Stover School were once part of an estate owned by James Templer who made his initial fortune whilst working for the East India Shipping Company. After James Templer and his wife Mary died, their three sons rebuilt the church in Teigngrace in honour of their parents. The building we see today was constructed in 1787 and replaced an existing church. Teigngrace St Peter and St Paul Church was rebuilt with a spire that has since come down
  • There is an excellent local guide to the church and its history on the Teigngrace Village website, link provided
  • 'When James Templer II inherited the Stover Estate in 1782 he continued his father's vision of developing Teigngrace. He endowed a new church in 1787 where his brother John was vicar for 45 years.' (Source: information board on the Stover Canal)
  • Teigngrace St Peter and St Paul Church is built from granite cut from the quarries on Dartmoor
  • In the local area, walk the Templer Way along Stover Canal (Disused) and explore the delightful Stover Country Park and Nature Reserve
  • By James Penman
