Tamar Valley Centre, Cornwall

  • Located in Drakewalls, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • The Tamar Valley isn't a particularly well known part of South West England. Running along the Cornwall and Devon border north or Plymouth to the Launceston area, the valley is both naturally beautiful and historically fascinating. There are various visitor centres and attractions in and around the valley that provide an excellent introduction to the area. The visitor centres at Drakewalls and Cotehele Quay are particularly useful
  • Drakewalls is the name of an old tin mine. Once the richest tin mine in East Cornwall, it's situated above the River Tamar near Gunnislake. It's also the location of the Tamar Valley Centre. There's parking across the road from the visitor centre. We've positioned Tamar Valley Centre on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. Note that it's not visible on pre June 2013 Google satellite imagery. You can see the old mine buildings, however
  • The building itself is carbon-neutral. Inside are information boards and displays. There are leaflets and books on sale. When we photographed and researched the area, there was a contemporary art exhibition showcasing the work of local artists
  • If you're interested in learning about the Tamar Valley, we'd also recommend you visit:
  • Cotehele Discovery Centre. This is on the quay near the National Trust's Cotehele House and Gardens
  • The National Trust's Buckland Abbey
  • The National Trust's Cotehele House and Gardens
  • Morwellham Quay which is part of the UNESCO Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site
