Stover Canal (Disused), Devon

  • Located in Newton Abbot, Devon, South West England, England
  • Stover Canal is a disused canal running between Ventiford and Jetty Marsh Nature Reserve on the northern fringe of Newton Abbot. We include the canal on PictureTheUK because it's part of the Templer Way
  • The canal was part of Stover Estate owned by the Templer family. '[James] Templer paid for and built the Stover Canal between 1790 and 1792 as a means of increasing his income from the rapidly expanding ball clay industry.' (Source: information board on Stover Canal, photo included)
  • Haytor Down Granite Tramways was built in the early 19th century to connect Haytor Quarries with Stover Canal and the Teign Estuary beyond. Today, the Templer Way pretty much follows the route of the tramway and canal
  • To visit Stover Canal, we'd recommend following the Templer Way from Stover Country Park and Nature Reserve. We've positioned all these points of interest on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see their locations. Also refer to the Ordnance Survey Explorer 110 'Torquay & Dawlish' map for detail. The Templer Way is clearly marked snaking through Stover Country Park and following the line of Stover Canal to Jetty Marsh Nature Reserve
