St Euny's Chapel and Holy Well, Cornwall

  • Located in St. Just, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • St Euny's Chapel and Holy Well are situated next to Carn Euny Ancient Village on The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula). Sancreed Chapel and Holy Well are about a mile away to the east as the crow flies
  • See Lelant St Uny's Church for more information about St Euny or St Uny. When researching Cornish saints we always refer to the work of Nicholas Orme. Of St Euny's Chapel and Holy Well, Orme writes: 'Euny's well at Chapel Euny in Sancreed was described by William Borlase in his 'Natural History of Cornwall' (1758: 31-2). 'As a witness of its having done remarkable cures', he wrote, 'it has a chapel adjoining it, dedicatd to St. Euinus; the ruins of which, consisting of much carved stone, bespeak it to have been formerly of little note. The Water [sic] has the reputation of drying humours, as well as healing wounds and sores'.' (Source: Nicholas Orme's 'The Saints of Cornwall'. Orme is an expert on early Christianity in South West England. Buy his books if this topic if of interest)
  • According to an information board in Penzance Penlee House Gallery and Museum, the rags that you'll see tied to the trees around sacred wells are called 'clouties'. A person with an illness ties the rag, or cloutie, to a tree. As the rag rots away so too does the illness disappear
