Port of Hayle, Cornwall

  • Located in Hayle, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • The Port of Hayle is one of ten areas that make up the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. In general, metal ore won from Cornwall and Devon mines had to be exported from ports around the coastline to smelters and destination markets. These ports also imported coal and supplied other goods to power the mines. Hayle was one of Cornwall's foremost ports
  • In addition to shipping metal ore out and bringing coal in, the Port of Hayle was home to some of the most important engineering works in the world. If you find Hayle on the Ordnance Survey Landranger 203 'Land's End & Isles of Scilly' map, you'll see Foundry marked to the west end of the town and Copperhouse to the east. Harvey's (Foundry) and Copperhouse were two rival foundries that built internationally important steam pumping engines used in the copper and tin mines inland
  • Hayle has a fascinating history. We'd recommend exploring the town on foot. There's a large car park by Copperhouse Pool next to the local information centre. From there, head down to Penpol Creek and Foundry Square. Follow the path that runs by Carnsew Pool into Hayle Harbour. There are great views of Hayle Towans
  • Just up the road from Hayle, Portreath was another big and important copper and tin port
