Okehampton Old Town Park Nature Reserve, Devon

  • Located in Okehampton, Devon, South West England, England
  • English Heritage's Okehampton Castle is located on the edge of the Dartmoor gateway town Okehampton. The castle rises from the north bank of the West Okement River. Across the water, along the valley floor, is Okehampton Old Town Park Nature Reserve. The land then climbs steeply to the high moors of Dartmoor National Park
  • 'This area was once part of Okehampton Castle's deer park. Archaeological evidence from the castle's kitchen waste shows that fallow deer were introduced by the original Norman occupiers in the 11th century when the deer park was created. The castle ramparts gave a bird's eye view of the chase, looking across into what is now Old Town Park where the scene of the final kill may have taken place.' (Source: information board on site)
  • There's a reasonable amount of parking by the castle. There's a wooden bridge spanning the river. The Two Castle Trail and West Devon Way run through Old Town Park Nature Reserve
