Lundy Island, Devon

  • Located in Devon, South West England, England
  • If you ever get a chance to visit Lundy Island, go. It's a very special place. About ten miles off the North Devon coast*, Lundy Island is surrounded by the Bristol Channel and Atlantic Ocean. We've positioned Lundy Island on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. Also refer to the Ordnance Survey Explorer 139 'Bideford, Ilfracombe & Barnstaple' map for detail
  • The island is reasonably small. Roughly five kilometres long and a kilometre wide, a fit person can easily walk around Lundy Island in a day. We've completed the circular walk with young kids and there were no problems
  • Whilst you can stay on the island, most people take a day trip from Bideford or Ilfracombe on the MS Oldenburg. The ship takes a couple of hours to sail from the mainland to Lundy Island so be prepared for an early start. When we researched and photographed the island, we left on a 9AM trip from Bideford. They asked us to be at the ticket office 45 minutes before departure. We returned at 8PM. At Bideford, there's a cheap long stay car park just north of the quay. In winter, the trip is made by helicopter from Hartland Point
  • The MS Oldenburg has open air seating. There's also seating below deck. The crossing can get choppy and sick bags are provided. It can also get cold on deck so bring appropriate clothing
  • The ship docks at the Landing Jetty in Landing Bay. From there, it's a short, sharp climb to the main settlement with its accommodation, shop and pub/cafe. There's a public toilet by Marisco Tavern. Click through to that listing to see its exact location
  • The island is flat and a rough road runs pretty much north/south. In our opinion, the joy of the island is its cliffs, coastal valleys and coastline. This is partly owing to its natural beauty and partly owing to its flora and fauna. Watching and listening to seals swim, sunbathe, chatter and squabble is an unforgettable experience. As their calls echo from the high cliffs, it's easy to imagine why seals have been mistaken for mermaids or ghosts
