A fine selection of hotels, holiday cottages, B&Bs, inns, lodges, Travelodges, Premier Inns etc in and around Moretonhampstead and Dartmoor National Park. We'd recommend staying in the White Hart Hotel in the centre of Moretonhampstead.

King Tor, Devon

  • Located in Moretonhampstead, Devon, South West England, England
  • As you leave Moretonhampstead and head south west on the B3212, the road climbs onto the high moors. King Tor is one of the first tors you'll see south of the road. We've positioned it on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its exact location
  • It's part of one large, high landmass that includes Hookney Tor, Hameldown Tor and Hamel Down so once you're up there, it's easy to walk the high ground of the local area
  • By the granite outcrop of King Tor, you'll find the grass covered King's Barrow. A short walk south west is English Heritage's Grimspound. We'd also recommend exploring Shapley Common as there are some superb examples of hut circles there
  • The views from King Tor are exceptional. You'll be able to see most of the eastern, northern and central sections of Dartmoor National Park. Highlights include the distinctive outline of Haytor Rocks and the rugged tops of Chinkwell Tor and Honeybag Tor to the south east. To the north east, beyond Fernworthy Forest, you'll see the high moors of the north plateau including Cosdon Beacon and Hill, the summit of Yes Tor and the dome of Hangingstone Hill
  • We've walked to King Tor from the (limited) parking area by the road below Grimspound. A longer route we'd recommend is from the large, tarmac parking area at the foot of Shapley Common. You head up the moor towards Hookney Tor and then trend east to King Tor. For both routes, study the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map
  • Note that there's a King's Tor over in the west section of the Park
