High Cliff (Boscastle/Crackington Haven), Cornwall

  • Located in Boscastle, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • When researching this stretch of the North Cornwall coastline, we were told that High Cliff (Boscastle/Crackington Haven) is Cornwall's highest cliff at 731ft or 223m above sea level*. Note that there are other places named 'High Cliff'. See High Cliff (Trentishoe), for example
  • To get to the top of the cliff, it's a stiff walk on the South West Coast Path from either the stunning National Trust village of Boscastle or Crackington Haven. These are big cliffs so it takes a little longer to cover the miles
  • Given the size of the cliffs, as you would expect, the views are massive. If you visit on a clear day, you'll see Dartmoor National Park rising to the east. Lundy Island and The Hartland Peninsula are to the north. The coastline runs south west past Boscastle and Tintagel to the mouth of the Camel Estuary and Trevose Head beyond
  • The cliff rises high above a number of beaches. Whilst these low tide strips of sand and rock are reasonably difficult to access, we'd recommend visiting. They are a superb counterpoint to the more gentle and crowded beaches around Bude or down the coast in the Camel Estuary. A good path runs down to The Strangles. We've walked behind Samphire Rock to Little Strand at low tide
  • *To place this in context, here are other famous cliffs in southern England. Golden Cap in Dorset is the highest cliff on the south coast of England. It's 626ft or 191m above sea level. Beachy Head is the highest chalk sea cliff in the UK. It's 530ft or 162m above sea level
