Haytor Rocks, Devon
- Located in Haytor Vale, Devon, South West England, England
- Having lived in Dartmoor National Park for years, we'd argue that this is its most well known tor. Partly owing to its distinctive shape, partly owing to its location on the eastern fringe of the Park close to South Devon and The English Riviera, it's a very popular place. The number of large car parks in the area is a testament to this
- 457 metres above sea level, it also offers fine views of this section of the National Park and across south and east Devon to the sea
- At the foot of the hill that leads up to the rocks is Haytor National Park Visitor Centre. There's a help desk and shop, toilets and (usually) an ice cream van. You're also highly likely to see Dartmoor Hill Ponies here
- Made from high quality granite, several disused quarries are nearby. Rock from here was used to build many famous buildings and structures in central London*.
- It's easy walking country and we'd recommend looping around Haytor Rocks using, in part, the old tramway tracks used to transport rock from the quarries. It's fun to summit Haytor Rocks but, clearly, take care. Use the Ordnance Survey OL28 'Dartmoor' map for detail
- Other tors in the local area include Saddle Tor and Rippon Tor, Hound Tor (East Dartmoor) and Chinkwell Tor. We'd also recommend walking out to Buckland Beacon to see The Ten Commandments Stones
- Haytor Vale, Widecombe in the Moor and Buckland in the Moor are local. Read our summary guide to Dartmoor National Park and browse our Top 10 Recommended Tors in Dartmoor National Park for further inspiration
- Last, this is the start/end of the Templer Way. If you fancy a walking adventure ...
- *If Dartmoor's quarrying history is of interest, also visit Foggintor Quarries over by Princetown. The quarries are impressive, the local area stunning
