Hayle Harbour and Quays, Cornwall

  • Located in Hayle, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • In the nineteenth century, the Port of Hayle was one of the most important mining ports in the world. Vast quantities of copper ore was shipped out to smelters in South Wales. Vast quantities of coal was brought back and then transported inland to power the mines. The process of 'copper out' and 'coal in' clearly required a sophisticated infrastructure. You'll see the remains of some of this infrastructure at Hayle Harbour and Quays. The Port of Hayle is part of the UNESCO Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. As you walk around the harbour and quays, remember that the Vatican City, Stonehenge and Machu Picchu are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It's a remarkable place with a remarkable history
