Hayle Estuary RSPB Nature Reserve, Cornwall

  • Located in Hayle, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • Browse the 'Photo Gallery' to see images of the Hayle Estuary RSPB Nature Reserve taken from the Eric Grace Memorial Hide. This overlooks the lagoon and saltmarsh at Ryan's Field. Beyond that are Lelant Water, Carnsew Pool, Hayle Estuary and Copperhouse Creek. Paths skirt, or extend into sections of, the reserve. You can also walk to the end of a spit of land that pushes out into Hayle Harbour towards Hayle Towans and Hayle Beach. There's plenty of parking by the Eric Grace Memorial Hide and Copperhouse Creek. Paths are marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer 102 'Land's End' map. Note that the South West Coast Path pretty much runs around the reserve
  • Upton Towans Nature Reserve and St Gothian Sands Nature Reserve are in the vast sand dune system that lines St Ives Bay to the north east of Hayle
  • 'With its unique position in the mild far south west of England, Hayle Estuary is one of the RSPB's most important nature reserves for migrating and wintering birds. Because it rarely freezes over, birds can feed here all year round and, in very cold winters, over 18,000 birds have turned up. Although much of the original estuary has been lost to industrial and housing development in the busy town, what remains is a magnet for a wide range of water birds.'
