Hawns and Dendles Gorge, Devon
- Located in Cornwood, Devon, South West England, England
- The River Yealm rises on the high moors of the south west section of Dartmoor National Park. The moors here are flat and boggy before they drop steeply south. Where the moors drop, the River Yealm cuts its way through Hawns and Dendles Gorge. This feature is marked on the Harvey British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' map. Browse our 'Photo Gallery' to view the gorge. As you'll see, it's a beautiful and remote place. Yealm Steps Waterfall is a highlight. South of Hawns and Dendles Gorge are Dendles Wood National Nature Reserve and the village of Cornwood close to the border of the National Park
- When we researched and photographed Hawns and Dendles Gorge, we started from the car parking area at New Waste. We followed the curve of Coombe Hill towards the River Yealm before walking up its east side to Yealm Steps Waterfall. Note Stall Moor and Coombe Hill Settlements and the remains of a blowing house as marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OLO28 'Dartmoor' map
- Hawns and Dendles Gorge is one of many stunning valleys and cleaves cut by rivers that flow down from the two high plateaus of Dartmoor National Park. Other valleys and cleaves we'd recommend visiting include:
- Lydford Gorge and Waterfall
- Teign Gorge
- Lustleigh Cleave
- Dart Gorge
- Tavy Cleave
